Störungen und Zusammenbruch der Gesellschaft drohen

In einem – am 07.12.2020 im Londoner Guardian erschienenen – offenen Brief forderten mehr als 250 Wissenschaftler aus 30 Ländern die politischen Entscheidungsträger auf, sich eingehender mit dem wachsenden Risiko gesellschaftlicher Störungen und Zusammenbrüche aufgrund von Klima- und Umweltschäden zu beschäftigen. Der Brief verlangt, sich darauf zu konzentrieren, wie man solche Störungen verlangsamen, sich darauf vorbereiten und denjenigen helfen kann, die bereits unter solchen Störungen leiden. Die Unterzeichner sind Spezialisten in einer Reihe von mit dieser Herausforderung befassten Themenbereichen, die gemeinsam der Meinung sind, dass es an der Zeit ist, auf wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über die missliche Lage der Menschheit zu hören.

„Betreff: Nur wenn wir den Zusammenbruch diskutieren, können wir uns vorbereiten

Als Wissenschaftler und Gelehrte aus aller Welt rufen wir die politischen Entscheidungsträger dazu auf, sich offen mit dem Risiko einer Störung oder gar eines Zusammenbruchs unserer Gesellschaften auseinanderzusetzen. Nachdem es uns fünf Jahre lang nicht gelungen ist, die Kohlenstoffemissionen im Einklang mit dem Pariser Klimaabkommen1 zu reduzieren, müssen wir nun die Konsequenzen tragen.

Während kühne und faire Anstrengungen zur Senkung der Emissionen und zum natürlichen Abbau von Kohlenstoff unerlässlich sind, halten Forscher in vielen Bereichen den gesellschaftlichen Zusammenbruch inzwischen für ein glaubwürdiges Szenario in diesem Jahrhundert2a, 2b. Es gibt eine Reihe von Ansichten über Ort, Ausmaß, Zeitpunkt, Dauer und Ursache solcher Zusammenbrüche; aber die Art und Weise, wie moderne Gesellschaften Mensch und Natur ausbeuten, ist eine gemeinsame Sorge3a,3b.

Nur wenn die politischen Entscheidungsträger beginnen, diese Gefahr eines gesellschaftlichen Zusammenbruchs zu diskutieren, können Gemeinschaften und Nationen beginnen, sich darauf vorzubereiten und so die Wahrscheinlichkeit, die Geschwindigkeit, die Schwere und den Schaden für die Schwächsten und die Natur zu verringern.

Einige Militärs sehen den Kollaps bereits als wichtiges Szenario, das Planung erfordert4a, 4b. Umfragen zeigen, dass viele Menschen inzwischen einen gesellschaftlichen Zusammenbruch erwarten5. Traurigerweise ist das bereits die Erfahrung oder Erinnerung vieler Gemeinschaften im Globalen Süden6. Das Thema wird jedoch in den Medien nicht gut behandelt und ist in der Zivilgesellschaft und der Politik weitgehend nicht gegenwärtig.

Wenn in den Medien über einen möglichen Kollaps berichtet wird, werden in der Regel Personen zitiert, die Diskussionen über das Thema verurteilen. Uninformierte Spekulationen, z. B. über ausländische Fehlinformationskampagnen oder Auswirkungen auf die psychische Gesundheit und Motivation, fördern keine ernsthafte Diskussion7. Vielmehr laufen solche Behauptungen Gefahr, die Tausenden von Aktivisten und kommunale Führungspersonen zu verraten, deren Antizipation des Kollapses Teil ihrer Motivation ist, auf Veränderungen in den Bereichen Klima, Ökologie und soziale Gerechtigkeit zu drängen.

Menschen, denen ökologische und humanitäre Themen am Herzen liegen, sollten nicht davon abgehalten werden, die Risiken einer gesellschaftlichen Störung oder eines Zusammenbruchs zu diskutieren. Das könnte die Gefahr bergen, dass die Agenda von Menschen vorangetrieben wird, die sich weniger für solche Werte einsetzen.

Einige von uns glauben, dass ein Übergang zu einer neuen Gesellschaftsform möglich sein könnte. Das wird mutiges Handeln erfordern, um den Schaden für das Klima, die Natur und andere Menschen zu verringern, einschließlich der Vorbereitung auf größere Störungen des täglichen Lebens. Wir sind uns einig darin, dass die Bemühungen, die Diskussion über den Kollaps zu unterdrücken, die Möglichkeit dieses Übergangs behindern.

Wir haben erlebt, wie emotional herausfordernd es ist, den Schaden zu erkennen, der angerichtet wird, zusammen mit der wachsenden Bedrohung für unsere eigene Lebensweise. Wir kennen auch das große Gefühl der Gemeinschaft, das entstehen kann8. Es ist an der Zeit, einander zu schwierigen Gesprächen einzuladen, damit wir unsere Mitschuld am Schaden reduzieren und kreativ sein können, um das Beste aus einer turbulenten Zukunft zu machen9.
